Gakundu Coffee Factory is located in Embu County, near Mount Kenya. Sitting at 1,650 metres above sea level, farmers predominantly grow SL28 alongside Ruiru 11 and Batian.
Ripe cherries are carefully sorted, pulped, fermented, washed and dried to 10.5% moisture.
Beyond coffee, the Gakundu Farmers’ Cooperative Society supports its farming community through pre-financing for school fees, farm inputs and emergencies, as well as inputs on credit and cash advances. With support from Coffee Management Services, the factory provides farmer training and promotes sustainable agricultural practices to improve long-term coffee production and farmer returns.
Environmental initiatives include responsible wastewater management and encouraging farmers to plant shade trees and other vegetation. Coffee is commonly grown alongside crops such as bananas and maize, with Grevillea and macadamia trees providing shade. The factory’s management team oversees processing, grading, farmer payments and producer support.
In the cup, we taste notes of blackcurrant and plum jam, with a juicy acidity.
